Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 24 July 2016

Rationale

In the year 2015 all the ten ASEAN countries have come together and joined the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Besides the AEC co-operation in social, economic, educational, and cultural aspects, we believe that the co-operation among Buddhists comprising of the different denominations of Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana will contribute to the peace and harmony in the AEC.

Recognizing the importance of Buddhist contribution to the ASEAN community, Buddhism for Education of Cambodia, Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University and World Buddhist University (WBU) will be hosting an International Conference with the theme “Buddhist Harmony in AEC: Regional and World Peace.” This theme is chosen to focus on the Buddhist principles of compassion and wisdom which can be translated into positive actions by the participants. We hope to further strengthen the specific network and co-operation among Buddhist scholars and practitioners in the ASEAN Economic Community and neighboring countries that was initiated by WBU in 2014, and as part of our contribution to commemorate the establishment of AEC in the year 2015.
